Description:
I have a brand new Alienware m15x laptop (Windows 7 64 bit). I downloaded the mysql-5.5.9-win64 and mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.31a-win32.

I walk through the MySQL msi not making changes to anything. When it’s done installing it launches Workbench and then goes into Not Responding.

-------------------------------------------------------

I just uninstalled the last attempt, removed the folders it left behind in
the Programs File and Programs File(86) and ProgramData folders.
I cleaned the registry.

Tried to install the mysql-5.5.9-win32 file again. It worked seemingly. When
I clicked "finish" at the end of the setup it was suppose to start the
"MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard" but it didn't. I waited a good minute
or so but nothing happened.

I figured it must have worked so I installed the
mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.31a-win32 next. When it loads, it won't go past the
Splashscreen. My computer sounds like it's running harder trying to open it,
so I let it go for a while hoping it needed time.... nada.

I turned off Skype while installing. I use AVG antivirus so I turned off the
resident shield hoping that would help.

I tried running the workbench first but that didn't work.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I’m going to try using Navicat, it will handle MySQL. I already signed in with the password I set during the MySQL installation, so that's some progress.
…………...
I installed the MySQL 64bit version no problem at all. I think by turning of all my User Acount Control settings helped.

BUT, the Workbench still crashes on start up...

How to repeat:
Brand new Akienware m15x with these specs: https://support.dell.com/support/order/GlobalOrderDetails.aspx?&l=EN&c=US&cs=29&order_numb...

This is my software I use: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1657745/software1.jpg

Install the mysql-5.5.9-win32 or mysql-5.5.9-win64 with the UAC turned off. Then install the mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.31a-win32.

Once you open the Workbench you see the splash screen for one second and then it goes blank. Task Manager says it's Not Responding.

Hi Adam

Please try this binary
 ftp://ftp.mysql.com/pub/mysql/download/gui-tools/mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.32pre-win32-noins...

and report back if it also crashes on startup for you. Thanks

Other information that could help narrowing this down:

Run the .NET installation verifier utility from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx and post the output.

Run msconfig.exe and post the output.
[4 Mar 2011 13:57] Joe T
Coming in from the other bug's thread...

Attaching 2 files:
1. .NET Install verifier log run for all testable versions of .NET (all verified sucessfully)
2. Win7 Event Viewer log of 3 events registered when the binary posted in this thread also crashed with same symptoms (splash screen, immediate crash).

There's no way to merge adding a comment AND attachments, is there?

What about msconfig? What software do you have configured to be auto-started?
If you have a few minutes, please consider joining IRC channel #workbench in chat.us.freenode.net
to help track this.
[4 Mar 2011 14:15] Joe T
Alfredo: i would join the IRC, but we have that blocked on our firewall (i work at a bank, so policies are pretty stringent). Also, Workbench works fine from my home computer (different hardware config, but similar software). Home computer is ASUS/AMD box, work is HP/Intel/NVidia.

I'm having the same problem launching workbenck. Splash screen displays, then nothing. I pulled this error log from windows events log. No ideas if it might help.

Just installed Workbench 5.2.33b and still have this crash problem.

i uninstalled the previous version before installing the update. Will also attach newest Win7 Event Viewer log to this bug.

Has there been any progress on this, or was it supposedly addressed in the new release?

Event info from mike schrempp says faulting module is aticfx32, which sounds like gfx driver. Can you update your driver and see if the problem persists? What about starting workbench with the -swrendering option?
[23 Mar 2011 19:05] Joe T
Seems unlikely that my crash would be the ATI driver, as i have an Intel CPU & Nvidia video card. ;)

Ran with -swrendering option, same result. Will attach event log of that crash as well.

[23 Mar 2011 19:06] Alfredo Kojima
At least 2 of the reporters seem to have ATI graphics cards, can you confirm what video chipset does your computers have and whether drivers are up to date?
[23 Mar 2011 20:06] Joe T
Computer model: HPE-450t
Win7 Pro 64 SP1
Intel i7
NVidia Quadro FX380
Vid driver version: 8.17.12.6645 (installed ~2 weeks ago)

i've been keeping the driver updated as often as i can, but the problem has existed across at least 3 driver updates.
[24 Mar 2011 1:44] mike schrempp
Just checked my driver.

My graphics device is

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Old driver (used with error messages in my previous post): 8.15.10.2025
Updated driver: 8.15.10.2253

Still didn't work.

Behavior changed: With the previous dirver, the splash screen went away within about 1 second. With the new driver, it took closer to 10 seconds.

Error message with current driver:

c:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Workbench 5.2 CE>

Just updated video driver to version 8.17.12.6766, released March 21. No effect on the problem. Seems pretty clear at this point it's not a video driver issue. And if it was, why would Workbench be the only program on my system that doesn't run properly?
[25 Mar 2011 23:45] Joe Omobono
Getting same error on

System: Windows 7 version 6.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb)

Using -->> (mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.33b-win32.msi)

mySQL is up and running (mysql-5.5.10-win32.msi),

mike schrempp's error was because of the video driver, the new error is a duplicate of bug #60412
Everybody else seems to have something different, which noone has been able to narrow down yet.
Some people with problems were able to fix by installing a 32bit version of Python. Can you try installing that to see if it helps? Installing Python isn't supposed to be a requirement, but there's something
wrong for a few users that's causing trouble unless a 32bit version of Python is installed. Additionally, do any of you have a 64bit version of Python already installed?
[28 Mar 2011 19:59] Joe T
i did not have either 32- or 64-bit Python installed.

i installed 32-bit to C:\Program Files (x86)\Python and tried launching Workbench. Same crash as before.

i then installed 64-bit to C:\Program Files\Python & launched Workbench. Same crash.

i'll attach the Event Log for each attempt, though i doubt there's much difference from previous logs.

Note, i did not restart my computer after either Python install. It didn't call for one, and i have a bunch of projects open. i'll follow up _IF_ Workbench launches successfully after a reboot.

ok had some success but a bit weird at the same time;

First:

Updated the drivers for the "ATI I/O Communications Processor PCI Bus Controller" This changed the display driver from "AMD 760G (Microsoft Corporation WDDM 1.1)" to "Radeon X1300/X1550 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)"

The above immediatedly killed the second monitor, however Workbench began working :D

Reconfiguring the system to run "AMD 760G (Microsoft Corporation WDDM 1.1)" as the driver re-enables the second monitor but kills Workbench.

Tried disabling each driver individually, but Workbench still crashes. So at this point at least for me it looks like an one or the other situation.

Extracted the following from the event logs: (Dunno if it will help or not but hopefully it does)

btw installing Python 32 bit /version 3.2 and version 2.6.3 (the latter in an attempt to match the python.dll version in workbench) did not work for me.
[14 May 2011 7:29] Valeriy Kravchuk
Please, uninstall all Python versions (if any remains) and check if the same problem happens with Workbench 5.2.33b (.msi binaries).
[1 Jun 2011 12:18] Joe T
i recently downloaded 5.2.34 r7780.

Uninstalled Python x86 & x64
Uninstalled existing Workbench install
Installed above version

Workbench now launches cleanly.
Whatever you guys did, thank you very much.
[1 Jun 2011 12:20] Joe T
PS: There was one other change in my system that MIGHT have affected MySQL Workbench: my employer recently switched from Symantec Corporate to Vipre, and the last time i tried to use Workbench before today i still had Symantec installed.

Possibly related, probably worth noting.
[1 Jun 2011 14:20] Armando Lopez Valencia
Hello Adam.
The new WB version 5.2.34 is out (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench/5.2.html).
Can you please try with this new version and let us know the outcome?
It worked for Joe.
Maybe you would like to follow Joe's steps.
Thanks.
[2 Jun 2011 16:59] Adam T. Janes
SOLVED

This new version is working with my W7 64 Alienware laptop I originally posted about.

THANK EVERYONE for their help.

Now I can finish my database class.
[6 Jun 2011 14:00] Valeriy Kravchuk
Not repeatable with 5.2.34 any more.
[20 Dec 2011 1:26] Jim Collings
Let me know if this should go in another place.

I am also getting System.AccessViolationException on startup also.
Windows 7 x64 on an ASUS model G73jh <-- Note: This is a stock model, so you can order one to solve bug if it's worth it to you.

have x86 2010 C++ lib installed

dual monitors w/ ATI graphics card. Will see if only one monitor helps.
[12 Feb 2012 21:47] George Messaritakis
I've been having the same problem, Workbench 5.2.37 crashing on startup, on a Dell XPS17, Win7 64, which has an Intel and an nVidia graphics processors. I am using nvidia as the default graphics processor on my second, main monitor.

I tried every other solution mentioned here and on other threads, but they didn't solve the problem.

Lastly, I tried running Workbench with the Intel graphics processor and it works (right-clicked and selected appropriate context menu). Any time I try running it with the nVidia processor it crashes, and this is repeatable.

Hope this helps someone...
