What exact version of MySQL Workbench, 5.2.x, do you use? Do you have a Windows service defined for the MySQL server you are trying to work with?

OK, this is the Workbench version. Now, you start Workbench and try to add server instance, right? What version of MySQL server is it? Is it running on localhost or on some other machine?

So, you do not have Windows service created/running for your MySQL server (if you gave it some unusual name, please, correct me). Then this looks like a known bug, Bug #59578.
