the porblem wiht 'adgang nægtet' is due to UAC being ON. If I start WB with explicit admin option then I get this 2009-12-10 17:40:21 - Checking server status: Server is stopped. 2009-12-10 17:40:24 - Server is stopped 2009-12-10 17:40:31 - Checking server status: Server is stopped. 2009-12-10 17:40:31 - Trying to start server... 2009-12-10 17:40:32 - [SC] StartService MISLYKKEDES 1056: Der krer allerede en udgave af tjenesten. (= an instance of this service is already running) 2009-12-10 17:40:32 - Checking server status: Server is stopped. If WB is not running with admin privileges the server management functionalites should be 'greyed out'. Not sure how it could be done though.

OK .. I had to edit the service name 3 places as I do not use the default names 'mysql' or 'mysqld'. Now it shows stopped when stopped and running when running .. but still I get some error ('can't connect ..') and the 'health graphics' are empty. I can connect with other clients without problems. BTW: It is too cumbersome to define a non-default service name or port. There is plenty of room in the wizard. It could all be in one screen, actually.

Hello Peter, is your system user, which you use for Workbench, allowed to start/stop the MySQL server (service for start/stop the server)?

"Susanne .. please read my comment [10 Dec 17:44] The problem occured because of UAC (User account control .. I guess you know what taht is in Windows Vista and higher?). Wirh UAC set ON even an admin user does not have admin privileges unless the user start the application with explicit admin privileges (to do this: right click the program icon and select 'run as administrator' (You may consider UAC a Windows implementation of 'sudo'). WB does not start with explicit admin privilege. Thus it cannot manage services i UAC is ON on the system. It should either elevate user automatically at program start up or the group of functionalites that require admin privilege should be disabled when not running with admin privileges. Besides my comment that it is cumbersome to configure WB to use servers not using default service name or default port is also valid. The complete GUI for server management is hopeless.

Please ignore my comment [10 Dec 17:21]. It was a configuration mistake (mismatched the ports of two servers on my system (I have 8 running at the moment!)). What remains is that WB does not take UAC into account - probably because MySQL'ers still use WinXP mostly or turn UAC OFF. But UAC has been in existence for 3+ years, so this is really very non-attentive development for Windows.

Sorry, made a reading error here. Of course you are right. If user has no rights then it should be greyed out or something similiar.

Hello, Running vista64 server status is not reported corretly as well (always stopped even when running). Note that that is even the case when the workbench is started form an administrator account and run as administrator is used. Also note that - in the backup function tables and schemas are fetched, despite the "server not running" - the backup function does not work (e.g. 13:19:28 Dumping lta (actiepakketen ) Running: mysqldump.exe --no-create-info=FALSE --order-by-primary=FALSE --force=FALSE --no-data=FALSE --tz-utc=TRUE --flush-privileges=FALSE --compress=FALSE --replace=FALSE --host=127.0.0.1 --insert-ignore=FALSE --extended-insert=TRUE --user=root --quote-names=TRUE --hex-blob=FALSE --complete-insert=FALSE --password=xxxxxxx --port=3306 --disable-keys=TRUE --delayed-insert=FALSE --delete-master-logs=FALSE --routines=FALSE --comments=TRUE --add-locks=TRUE --flush-logs=FALSE --dump-date=TRUE --allow-keywords=FALSE --create-options=TRUE --events=FALSE lta actiepakketen Operation failed with exitcode 1) - note that I am missing the destination directory on the command line :> - I would like an option to change the default backup / dump directory and naming schema Just start playing arround. Problem is that the workbench is not an option yet IMHO but the old administrator gui is also not an option any more since e.g. backup and restore functions in that gui have critical bugs !! So please give absolute priority in fixing the admin functions in the workbench !!! Sincerely, Louis

Works for me just fine on Vists but what I had to do was match the service name. The default is 'mysql' so if you install the service with a different name you have to change it to whatever you named it during install. For the starting and stopping change the 'sc' to 'net'. Life is good after that. John

Hello Peter, could you check recent version to see if those features are working for you (we've made several changes during the lats versions)

I do not have the same environment available but I will try next week from Webyog office (cannot be before as I am currently living during weekends in a hotel with a bandwidth spiking at 2 KiloBytes/second!) But everything has its own right and they are very proud of their Internet connection here (they call it 'unlimited broadband' :-))

I am sorry but I have no option to test this again UAC on as a currently have only a XP system available.

Is it possible for you to test this again with recent version of Workbench, 5.2.20?
