The x86 version is also affected: C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\bin>MySQLInstanceConfig.exe The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is in correct. Please see the application event log for more detail.

Thank you for a problem report. And what exactly does Event Log say? (I had installed 5.1.23 without any problems on XP SP2...)

It's quite helpful, I didn't expect that: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\bin\MySQLInstanceConfig.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\bin\MySQLInstanceConfig.exe" on line 6. The value "asAdministrator" of attribute "level" in element "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1^requestedPrivileges" is invalid.

Hi, I am having the same problem with mysql-5.0.51a-win32 on windows vista business on a 32bit machine. I have opened up a port for mysql and also disabled the user access control. However, the side-by-side configuration error remains unresolved. Has anyone cracked this or it's a bug in MySQL? Cheers, Dominic

Hello everyone, There is a posting on the install forum: http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,195569,195569#msg-195569 that solves the problem. It appears to be a small bug in the MySQLInstanceConfig executable. It works for me. Dominic

Are you kidding me? I have to hack an executable to get the stupid thing to work?

FWIW - I did not run into this problem when I installed 5.0.37
