Description:
I have never successfully installed mysql on this machine, but I had some failed attempts, including one from source code, in the past. 

The error I'm receiving is the "There is nothing to install" from the packaged installation. When I installed the Pref.Pane component, It says that: 

"The MySQL Server Instance is running" 

but doesn't give me a stop button. Instead, the "Start MySQL Server" button is there. 

I checked thoroughly my entire system and there isn't any file regarding a mysql installation, or at least nothing with the name "mysql" on it. I tried to install the StartupItem to stop de server, but it says it cannot find the MySQL startup script!

Is there some sort of lock file that locked my installation in a "running" state? And is this the reason why the installer says "nothing to install" ?

I'm unable to install mysql for months now because of this. 

How to repeat:
I am not sure if a failed install attempt generated the "runing" state, but I don't remember having any attempt going past the "there is nothing to install" screen, except the one I made from source code. But I had the same error before that.

There are parts of previous packages installed on your system. So this is not MySQL bug.

Thank you, I deleted the /Library/Receipts mysql entries and it worked.
