There are various bug reports (like https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=83145) which report crashes due to failed connections. Since I have a direct connection with the RDS and the EC2 instance in the same subnet I think that it's very unlikely that network connections are failing, however there are likely permissions problems and so the different bugs may have the same root cause.

Thank you for the bug report. Bugs needs to be filed when MySQL Oracle binaries are used so we test against MySQL Oracle products, so please test against our binaries. Thanks in advance.

Hi; @Miguel Solorzano These tests _were_ carried out on Oracle MySQL binaries downloaded direct from the site here. This was running on AWS Linux 2 but I used the generic linux binaries so that should not make a difference.

Hi Cara Selvio, You are using mysqlpump/mysqldump from our binary package but you are connecting to the non mysql server, so the behavior is unpredictable. Now, please show us exactly how did you invoke mysqldump/mysqlpump and how they failed so we can try to help but this really is a support question for RDS people in Amazon, not our bug. thanks Bogdan

The mysqlpump 8. failing to dump is a duplicate of bug https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=95541 where it is trying to read that variable that does not exist on server, but please show how your 5.7 mysqldump/mysqlpump failed.
