Fixed as of the upcoming MySQL Workbench 8.0.12 release, and here's the changelog entry:

An existing MySQL model file when selected from the Home screen generated
an error (Error unserializing GRT data string too long) and did not open.

Same bug still exists in v 8.0.22 build 107600 CE  (64 bits) Community
despite the above comment that this should be fixed in an earlier version.

This is a long-time bug (also listed in #80017, 84387) and the internet-theory it has to do with a normal connection window being opened at the same time seams to be correct for me; ie if I close all tabs/connections in workbench and click on the .mwb file in filesystem explorer to open it, then it works.
