Description:
I just re-installed MySQL server and Workbench.  Following the tutorial for MyFirstConnection.  I receive the the following error.

Error is at Configure Local Management at Testing Host Machines Settings.

Check if /etc/my.cnf can be accessed
Operation failed: std::exception

How to repeat:
Follow the tutorial instructions after install

Suggested fix:
i do not have a fix. i am wondering if this is installed correctly.

Thank you for the bug report. Which WorkBench version are you trying to install and connect?. Which MySQL server version are you installed?. Are you able to connect with mysql command line client?.

Workbench is 6.3.9 build 10690321 CE 64 Bit

I can connect and start up and shut down MySQL server from the Mac OS terminal screen.

Thank you for the feedback.
This "exception" error message is observed when the conf file is missing in the default location(in case of binary tarball installation), or not readable etc scenarios.

That is the obvious part.  so what is the solution?

This is normal behavior for my.cnf check so you can ignore it and continue with connection wizard. That is nothing wrong is just information that my.cnf is not exists in default location. If you want you can create one in that location or point to other my.cnf file on the system profile page on edit connection.
