Description:
Installing the full package, what appears to be the last step of the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Window fails because it cannot verify. The reason appears to be that a window opens behind the Wizard window, and expects a response from me.

But I cannot access the window wanting the response or even see what it is. All I can see is the x to close the window because the MySQL Server Instance Config wizard is in front of it and will not allow me to move it so I can respond to the event behind the wizard window. I can change focus, but the MySQL wizard remains always on top and unmovable at this point.

I think it is possibly my Norton firewall opening behind requiring me to configure it to allow mySQL. As I said, I cannot see the window behind, so it is a guess that it's Norton. I can close the window behind, but the INSTALLATION NEVER COMPLETES.

How to repeat:
Not sure because I'm not sure what window opened behind. My guess would be that it's Norton Internet Security firewall config window that is responding to the installation event and requiring me to allow the installation to proceed. That's the only program I run that pops up requiring a response during program installations. It did allow me to respond to a Norton popup to allow MySQL interent access during the account creation phase of the installation earlier.

A guess: Try installing Norton Internet Security 2004 on Windows XP using D-Link firewall, port 3306, and install full package 4.1.9 with windows installer.

Possibly this is not Norton but another MySQL dialog box. I have no way of knowing.

Suggested fix:
Please fix this bug to allow the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Window to be moved from its position in the center of the screen during the final stage of installation so dialog boxes and windows that open behind it that need a response to an event triggered by the installation can be accessed.

Possibly you could change the location of the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard window to appear on the bottom left of the screen if it cannot be moved, as most other programs also open their boxes in the center as well.

Or you could NOT require the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard window to remain on top during the installation.

I wasn't able to repeat the behavior reported and I have
on my machine Norton firewall enabled.

I have the same problem with 4.1.9 running on Windows 2003 SP1. When I go to the Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) and look at the Process tab, there is no process called mysqld, mysqld-nt, or any other name containing "sql". By moving the Instance Configuration window away from the centre of the screen before clicking Execute I was able to see it; it said that the connection to the server had been lost during the query and I think that that was because the mysqld process crashed.

This doesn't seem to happen with a virgin install (ie the first time I ever make an instance after installing the server software); only if I attempt to reconfigure the instance or delete the instance and make a new one.

AFAICT the only way to change an instance once configured is to completely uninstall (including manually deleting the directories and files left behind by the uninstaller) and then reinstall the MySQL software.

I am using Windows 7 and I have been trying to install the server but result with what had already been described above.

My first installation instance was "mysql-5.1.42-win32.msi" (the full package version) and after a few seconds of "(Not Responding)", everything was successful. After realizing I only need to use "the essential" version, I download and re-install the essential package and the "(Not Responding)" is forever. The version in question is "mysql-essential-5.1.42-win32.msi" and "mysql-essential-5.1.42-win64.msi". I have waited for half an hour now and still not responding.

I may have to revert back to the full package again.
