Description:
I had version 4.1.7 running; everything worked fine. Then I uninstalled 4.1.7 thereby discarding all data, too, and installed 5.0.2-alpha with standard options. The installation worked fine so far, the service was started and MySQL Query browser could be invoked, showing schemas "mysql" and "test". When I clicked on the expand icon left of "mysql" to show the tables contained, "Fetching data" was displayed for a while, than Windows announced, that the "MySQL" service had to be aborted.

How to repeat:
I can repeat it this way on my Win XP SP1 box:
Uninstall MySQL, delete complete installation path including data
Install MySQL 5.0.2 alpha with standard options
Configure service with standard options
Run MySQL Query Browser
Click on schema "mysql" to expand table display
"Fetching Data" appears
MySQL Service crashes
