After manually starting the MySQL service, the error is no longer happening.

Found out what the problem is. The service name remains "MySQL" and not "MySQL55". This causes the upgrade process also to fail as it cannot find the MySQL55 service to start. This seems to be a bug in which old MySQL service is not also updated with the correct service name.

Hello Mor Sagmon, Thank you for the bug report. I tried to reproduce the issue at my end using MySQL Installer 5.7.10 with existing server 5.5.17, but not seeing any issue in Service name. Could you please provide repeatable test case step by step (exact screenshot, etc. - please make it as private if you prefer) to confirm this issue at our end? Thanks, Chiranjeevi.

Added a screenshot of the MySQL services on my machine. MySQL - the previous service. MySQL57 - the new service that was just installed. The installations process did NOT upgraded, deleted or disabled the old MySQL service. It seems that TWO parallel MySQL DBs are now operating on my machine. This duality also confused some of the installation and configuration tasks, hence some error messages and lack of successful migration of existing databases. In short: the installation process needs to IDENTIFY existing MySQL services and do something with them...

Hello Mor Sagmon, Thank you for your feedback. I could not see any issue with MySQL upgrading from 5.5.17 -> 5.6.28 -> 5.7.10 and we could run MySQL major versions in single system like 5.1, 5.5, 5.6 and 5.7 Manual for upgrading MySQL on Windows: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/windows-upgrading.html Thanks, Chiranjeevi.
