Absolutely frustrating to run a SQL query without any criteria and find Workbench hangs. It is just a basic SQL, for instance - 
SELECT * FROM courier;

How to repeat:
Basically it can hang for ever. Even 30 minutes. The number of rows can be anything from like over 1000 records. It is the same behaviour. Workbench seems to stop returning rows after a particular count.
