Description:
I installed MySQL. version 5.0.2 alpha and MySQL Administrator and MySQL Query Browser.

I found that on virtually every query (simple queries such as select * from table) using a tiny training database, the query fails with a "cannot connect to the server" error. Each time I find that for some reason the MySQL service has stopped and I have to restart it manually. The same problem occurs on two Windows PCs, one with XP Pro and one with Windows 2000 server.

The system gives no reason for the service shutting down. I tried installing the server using both the "zip" installation package and the "msi" installation package. The problem is common to both. (On the XP Pro machine, I get the Microsoft message saying the server had to close and "send" or "don't send" an error report to Microsoft. I sent an error report on many of the MySQL server shutdowns.)

The Windows XP Pro machine also has the MySQL Control Center installed. I find that I get fewer MySQL service shutdowns using it although the service fails more than 75% of the time while using Control Center as my MySQL client.

How to repeat:
Go to control panel/Adminiatrotor tools/services and manually restart the "MySQL" service, return to the MySQL Query Browser and execute any form of query (click on a table icon or database icon or hand enter a simple SQL statement such as "select * from table xxxxxxx".

After a considerable delay and a lot of hard drive activity, a "cannot connect to the server" message will appear in small print at the bottom of the screen.
