Thank you for this bug report. This appears to be an authentication failure - perhaps a new password for the root@localhost account was generated during the 5.7 upgrade? Alternatively, perhaps the pre-existing password for root@localhost leveraged the old_password (pre-4.1 authentication) model?

there is a possibility that installing process is not understanding soft-links a have moved /var/lib/mysql in a raid10 and create ln -s when upgrading mysql-5.5 to mysql-5.6 everything was fine ; -to benefit from udf_json.so I made 5.6 -> 5.7 and BUMM! Say a fresh instalation with no realocation of datadir will resolve root@localhost authentication but : postfix-mysql & dovecot-mysql are uninstalled and incompatible with mysql-6.7 on libmysqlclient18
