Description:
At the end of the install it says it failed and to report it to you.  DIALOG TitleBar "Install MySQL 5.6.21-community"   DIALOG Text: "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing (part of G cut off and no more text on that line)"   DIALOG message after the YELLOW "!" graphic is   "The Installation failed.     The Installer encountered an errors that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Suggested fix:
Try the install on a fresh copy of Yosemite. My system is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) running MacOS 10.10 (Yosemite). My computer is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

I think I've figured this out.

When I download either the DMG or the tar.gz archive for Mac OS X 10.9, the contents are actually for Mac OS X 10.8 (NOT 10.9 like it says)

This problem seems to stem from a failure to install the startup item on OS X. See this post http://coolestguidesontheplanet.com/get-apache-mysql-php-phpmyadmin-working-osx-10-10-yose...

I removed the startup using customised installation and it worked perfectly.
