Description:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/pam-authentication-plugin.html#pam-authentication-p...

"The PAM authentication plugin checks at initialization time whether the AUTHENTICATION_PAM_LOG environment value is set (the value does not matter)."
This is true, but the environment variable must be set when starting the server. Someone might try to set it on the client side and expect it to work...

"If so, the plugin enables logging of diagnostic messages to the standard output."
I found the messages in my error log. This is probably dependend on how mysqld is started.

How to repeat:
Read pam auth docs.
