OK .. the installer will update itself (at least in this particular case). So far so good! But the logic it uses is hidden for user.

Fixed as of the upcoming MySQL Installer 1.4.0 release, and here's the changelog entry: Clicking "?" on the dashboard now displays the MySQL Installer version number. Thank you for the bug report.
