Description:
I tryed several times to install the MySQL server, with the help of the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard 1.0.1 and received the error message "Cannot create Windows service for MySQL. Error: 0".

I looked up the service in the windows console, and found it installed, but trying to run it from there leads to the error: (translated from German) "The service 'MySQL' on local computer could not be started. Error 2: the system cannot find the file".

How to repeat:
Start the Setup.exe file from the mysql-4.1.7.zip file, install and use the Configuration Wizard to configure using the standard settings.
Installation folder is: "D:\Programme\MySQL";
options are "Detailed Configuration", "Server Machine", "Multifunctional Database", "D: installation Path", "Decision Support (DSS)/OLAP", "Enable TCP/IP Networking, Port Number 3306", "Best Support For Multilingualism", "Install As Windows Service, Name: MySQL", "Password: Test",
  at this point, pushing "execute" at the next dialog leads to the error message Error: 0

Windows XP, Service Pack 2

Hi,

This is error is usually means that you have MySQL server installed before and service with name 'MySQL' and it was not correctly removed.
Go to the registry and remove all entries related to the old MySQL installation.
Then try to install MySQL server again.
