Tested this scenario using the same Client on a different MySQL server, and there is no problem. Server version: 5.6.10 MySQL Community Server (GPL) on a Fedora 14 host. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but the client is connecting to the Fedora host using SSL, as opposed to an unsecured connection to the FreeBSD host.
