Sorry, ignore my previous comment. It is not a show-stopper, I can still see explain plans if I do them manually (adding "explain").

Fixed as of the upcoming MySQL Workbench 5.2.45, and here's the changelog entry: The "Explain" button would not display the results in the "Explain" tab. Thank you for the bug report.
