Please, check if this problem still happens with a never version, 5.5.20.

I've updated all my servers to 5.5.20 - it did not fix the error, so I rebuilt the 2 broken servers from another slave and everything was fine. Now, the error is happening again on a different slave -- the seconds behind master was in the 10s of thousands -- I shut it down; it took a long time before the process timed out, but the server is still shutting down (a half hour later)
