Description:

firstly, i had installed the mysql 5.5.19 version from mysql website with MySQL-5.5.19-1.linux2.6.i386.tar when installing then this error comes:--ls: /var/lib/mysql/*.err: No such file or directory

after that when run the mysql then this error coming MySQL is not running, but lock file (/var/lock/subsys/mysql[FAILED]

Starting MySQL....The server quit without updating PID file (/var/lib/mysql/ip-hostname------.pid).                      [FAILED]

i had reboot the system many times but vain, i would be appreciate if anyone solve my prob.

i can repeat this bug again to install the rpm -ivh MySQL-server-5.5.19-1.linux2.6.i386.rpm

I can not repeat described behavior. Please try with current version 5.5.20 and if problem still exists provide output of ps -ef | grep mysql

Thank to you for reply,but i had installed again above rpm package then it showed that error but at last i got successful installation with 5.5.19

Closing this mystery as "Can't repeat", because you finally successfully installed MySQL from RPM package.

Now I got same error as you. I used MySQL-server package. Verified as described.

Server is installed though.

Not enough information to understand whether this was a problem specific to the 5.5.19 generic RPMs or not. The lack of similar reports indicate that it was something specific to 5.5.19. I am thus closing this, since considerable time has passed.
