  What exact version, 5.1.x, are you installing? Please, specify the exact options selected/entered at each installation step. Are you 100% sure you had never had MySQL installed on this system?

  It is asking me for the current root password also, using mysql-installer-community-5.5.28.2 to install MySQL. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  Thank you for the feedback. I assume you use Windows and Configuration Wizard. This is not a problem that it asks for password: simply leave password field blank or unset checkbox "Secure my installation".
