sorry .. link to docs was wrong. But http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/mysql-command-options.html tells the same. However "character-set-server=cp1251" works fine. So documentation bug? Or regression?

Why do you think default-character-set should work in [mysqld] section of 5.5.18 if our manual, http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/server-options.html#option_mysqld_default-character..., clearly says: "This option is deprecated in favor of --character-set-server. See Section 9.5, “Character Set Configuration”. --default-character-set was removed in MySQL 5.5.3."
