Please, check if the same problem still happens with a newer version, 5.5.17. Maybe it was just packaging mistake...

Verified just as described with 5.5.17 on Mac OS X 10.5.6. It used to work in the past, so we have a regression bug here...

Just had the same problem with mySQL 5.5.20 (mysql-5.5.20-osx10.5-x86_64.dmg). I downloaded from Argonne National Laboratory / Chicago, IL via FTP (verified md5). My Mac is running OSX 10.5.8, and has 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (64bit).

Posted by developer: Mac OS X packaging was thoroughly revised for MySQL 5.6 upwards, so closing this as Obsolete.
