Description:
When I click on the toolbar icon to make a new tab, it now opens an "SQL File" tab instead of an ad hoc "Query" tab. This is annoying because it asks to save the file when closing the tab and it takes up more screen space than just the word query. I don't see any option for changing the "new tab" behavior.

How to repeat:
Click icon for new tab, press ctrl-T, or File->New Query Tab.

Suggested fix:
Provide menu options for opening either a new Query Tab or SQL File. Make the toolbar icon open a Query Tab.

Still a problem in 37.

Fixed as of the upcoming MySQL Workbench 5.2.45, and here's the changelog entry:

A new "General", "SQL Editor" option was added. Enabling "Create new tabs
as Query tabs instead of File" (disabled by default) causes new SQL Editor
tabs to default as Query tabs instead of SQL File tabs. File tabs include
additional options, and prompt to be saved when the tab closed.

Also, this new option has been documented.

Thank you for the bug report.

I just wanted to say thanks. This has been a tiny but persistent thorn in my side for some time now and I have upgraded to the newest build and am already happier.
Thank you.
