Description:
I am not able to install MYSQL DB, version 5.1.56 on my linux.x64 box

It gives me the following error

sh-3.2# rpm -Uvh MySQL-server-5.1.56-1.glibc23.x86_64.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
ls: /var/lib/mysql/*.err: No such file or directory
ls: /var/lib/mysql/*.err: No such file or directory
   1:MySQL-server ########################################### [100%]
ERROR: 1136 Column count doesn't match value count at row 1
110401 3:11:07 [ERROR] Aborting

110401 3:11:07 [Note] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown complete

Installation of system tables failed! Examine the logs in
/var/lib/mysql for more information.

You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:

    shell> /usr/sbin/mysqld --skip-grant &

and use the command line tool /usr/bin/mysql
to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables:

   shell> /usr/bin/mysql -u root mysql
    mysql> show tables

Try 'mysqld --help' if you have problems with paths. Using --log
gives you a log in /var/lib/mysql that may be helpful.

Please consult the MySQL manual section
'Problems running mysql_install_db', and the manual section that
describes problems on your OS. Another information source are the
MySQL email archives available at http://lists.mysql.com/.

Please check all of the above before mailing us! And remember, if
you do mail us, you MUST use the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!

/usr/bin/mysql

is not present.

Can some one please help me with this?

Thanks,
Sowmya.

How to repeat:
I can reproduce it on my machine by running
rpm -Uvh MySQL-server-5.1.56-1.glibc23.x86_64.rpm

Suggested fix:
I am not sure.

Please, send the output of:

uname -a
ls -l /var/lib/mysql

Linux commands.

Did you have any previous version of MySQL server installed on this system?

Hi Valeriy,

Here is the output requested.

You had removed binaries, but not datadir or my.cnf it seems. So, it looks like there is a problem with some of settings in my.cnf remained from the previous installation.

Please, send the output of:

find / -name my.cnf 2>/dev/null
find / -name .my.cnf 2>/dev/null

H,

Output of the find command hangs. Its been 4 hours since I gave the command and I am still waiting for the output.
Is there any work around for this?

Thanks,
Sowmya.

Let's search in usual places. Kill your find command and try these:

find /usr -name my.cnf 2>/dev/null
find /etc -name my.cnf 2>/dev/null
find /home -name .my.cnf 2>/dev/null

Hi Valeriy,

I did execute the commands what you told me to.
The first two commands dint write anything to the file.
But the command find /home -name .my.cnf 2>/tmp/null (used /tmp/null dir as /dev/null was saying its not a file when I opened it) gave the following output
