Description:
The documentation for 5.5 indicates that flush-logs before/after version 5.5.7 behaves differently.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/error-log.html

The documentation for version 5.1 describes the same behavior differences but before/after version 5.1.51
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/error-log.html

This appears to be a discrepancy. I am forced to believe the 5.1 documentation is correct. When I find the 5.5 documentation is incorrect in one place, I find it difficult to trust it elsewhere.

On my 5.1.47 server it behaved as expected, renaming the file to <fn>-old. I assume the other behavior will apply on my 5.5.6 server and proceed with caution.

How to repeat:
View the documentation links above.
I don't have access to enough server versions to make a determination.

Suggested fix:
Correct the 5.5 documentation.

Both 5.1 and 5.5 documentation is correct. This change in behavior was a result of the fix for bug #29751. The fix was added to 5.1.51 and 5.5.7 as you can see from the comments in that bug report.

So, this part of documentation applies to 5.1 versions since 5.1.51 and to 5.5 versions since 5.5.7. 5.1 and 5.5 are developed in parallel, and fix was NOT applied to older 5.5 versions. It was merged upstream, to new versions of 5.1.x and 5.5.x at the moment of fix.
