Both 5.1 and 5.5 documentation is correct. This change in behavior was a result of the fix for bug #29751. The fix was added to 5.1.51 and 5.5.7 as you can see from the comments in that bug report. So, this part of documentation applies to 5.1 versions since 5.1.51 and to 5.5 versions since 5.5.7. 5.1 and 5.5 are developed in parallel, and fix was NOT applied to older 5.5 versions. It was merged upstream, to new versions of 5.1.x and 5.5.x at the moment of fix.
