While using MySQL Server Instance Configuration
It fails at "Apply Security Settings" with the following Error
Error Nr. 1364
Field: 'authentication_string' doesn't have default value

OS: Windows 7
DB: MySQL 5.5.8 GA

Why is it critical?
This error stops the installation and unable to use the database.

How to repeat:
Start the Configuration Instance Wizard
1. Detailed Configuration
2. Server Machine
3. Transaction Database Only
4. InnoDB Table Space
5. Manual Settings for connection (10)
6. Enable TCP/IP Networking (Add Firewall exception checked) default Port (3306)
7. UTF8 (Character Set)
8. Install as Windows Service
9. Security Options (Checked Enable root access from remote machine)
10. Ready to Execute (Starts the Service and fails at 'Apply Security Settings')

All these are about the same (same underlying reason - different symptoms)

Hey Peter,

Anyway to get out of this mess. I installed the 5.5.8 on a new system with 64 bit Windows 7.

Just either

1) don't select 'strict' mode in the wizard
2) Don't allow root-connection from remote host and don't add anonymous user.
.. the wizard will continue. Use another client to add users and edit configuration manually

It is not critical that the wizard fails as long as you can start the server. You can edit configuration and add users manually.

I made it work.
The only change I made was to un-check the "Enable Strict Mode"

The entire trouble shooting cost 4 hours.
