Description:
Just installed MySql 5.1.51-winx64 followed by MySql Workbench 5.2.29-win32. Created a connection on localhost 127.0.0.1. Clicked on the Configuration tab and immediately got an error dialog:

Error Opening Configuration File
Exception: Internal error. File data passed is not in expected format. This is a bug, we would appreciate if you file a bug report at http://bugs.mysql.com. [OK]

Hit OK button and the configuration screen appears to function.

Clicked around a little but made no changes. Pressed the [Apply] button in the lower right. Got an "Apply Changes to MySQL Configuration File" dialog in which the text "There are no changes." was displayed. Pressed the [Apply] button and got the following error dialog:

Could not Save COnfiguration File
There was an error saving the configuration file.
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\Program Files\\MySQL Server 5.0\\my.ini'

Checked the file system. The folder is named "MySQL Server 5.1" not "MySQL Server 5.0"

So I went into the server instance editor and changed the path that was put in there by default to point to the right folder.

Fixed.

How to repeat:

Suggested fix:
Update the default value for the path to the 5.1 config file.

workbench doesn't handle non-existing config filenames properly

Hello,

I just tried the same thing - using a fresh install on a newly formatted 2008 R2 server. I first installed mysql-5.1.51-winx64 to the K:\mysql folder and then installed mysql-workbench-gpl-5.2.29-win32.

I opened the workbench tools and tried to open sql manager to the local host and got the following results -

What find_config_file/local
Check if can be accessed
Operation failed: File doesn't exist
What find_config_file/local

Operation failed: File doesn't exist

I tried to go through the instance files with a detailed config but I still can't get it to work - anyone who can spoon feed it to a mysql idiot, I would greatly appreciate it.

I uninstalled and deleted all mysql and reinstalled to the K: drive on my system
After it tried to create the local host entry in the sql manager and failed,
I went to review settings

I have no idea what I should enter under
section of the server instance

I put in the K:\mysql path - I have no idea what I should have put.
When I opened the configuration file settings in the sql manager it created an entry for me so I don't get an error but have no idea if this is correct.

This problem is not Windows-specific.

I found exactly the same problem on a clean Mac install of MySQL 5.1.50 for MacOS X 10.6 x86, 64 bit.

An entry has been added to the 5.2.31 changelog:

When clicking on the Configuration tab in the Administrator, the following error was generated:
