I was experiencing the same problem on my openSUSE 11.3 installation. I had MySQL Workbench 5.1.18 installed from the openSUSE repositories. I installed the download of 5.2.28 and it would not launch. YaST search showed that the downloaded file was installed as mysql-workbench-gpl and that mysql-workbench from openSUSE repository was still installed. I uninstalled the version from the suse repos and the new version worked. ymmv

Yes you are right. Have to uninstall previous 5.1.18 and then install this new one. Thanks for the tip, i think that 'upgrade' doesn't work anyway. (Changed to S3: Non-Critical) Well running this new version I still get this from console: ** Message: Gnome keyring daemon seems to not be available. Stored passwords will be lost once quit /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Crypto/Util/randpool.py:40: RandomPool_DeprecationWarning: This application uses RandomPool, which is BROKEN in older releases. Still I get this when opened from konsole jago@jagobook:~> mysql-workbench ** Message: Gnome keyring daemon seems to not be available. Stored passwords will be lost once quit /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Crypto/Util/randpool.py:40: RandomPool_DeprecationWarning: This application uses RandomPool, which is BROKEN in older releases. See http://www.pycrypto.org/randpool-broken RandomPool_DeprecationWarning) /bin/sh: ifconfig: no se encontrĂ³ la orden /usr/bin/mysql-workbench-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/mysql-workbench/modules/wb.mysql.validation.grt.so: undefined symbol: _ZN3grt8internal5Value7releaseEv Now it appear as an 'update' to the previous installation, so i have to uninstall the old one and when running it again I get splash and workbench window fine, and console I get: jago@jagobook:~> mysql-workbench ** Message: Gnome keyring daemon seems to not be available. Stored passwords will be lost once quit /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Crypto/Util/randpool.py:40: RandomPool_DeprecationWarning: This application uses RandomPool, which is BROKEN in older releases. I don't know why appear 'ifconfig', anyway have to uninstall the old one before or after installation of this new version

Well... i didn't try this same problem with my machine, I just uninstalled previous one, installed new version and it work. Now I have another issue. with 5.2.33 and my new openSUSE 11.4 configuration, check this http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?152,412016,412016#msg-412016 I think that there is something with video driver and how programs display GUI with it, because VLC crash at startup too in my computer configuration. Only splashscreen and then paafff... crash, nothing with --verbose and --force-sw-render or --force-opengl-render from console. I just want to know if there's a way to debug this more accurately.

So original problem is no longer repeatable, isn't it? As for new problem with 5.2.33 on OpenSuSE 11.4, I think you should report a new bug.
