I tried re-installing from the MSI file and it works again (at least on 1st attempt).

Sorry, but I subsequently discovered that the occasional Windows-7 chkdsk runs at start up were actually sufficiently severe to cause corrupted user files. (Microsoft were completely useless at addressing this issue!) Since re-running the installation causes the system to run properly for use over the whole weekend, I now think this must have been the result of file corruption which has happened since upgrading to Windows 7. Sorry for any wasted effort this may have caused.
