Description:
I can't install MySQL on Windows XP SP3.

I'm getting the installation error ('Error 25531.Failed to openXML file ... \svctag.xml ...') as reported in several other posts.

HP Intel Core 2 CPU 6400, Windows XP SP3.

Tried Leon's suggestion in http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=45477 (editing svctag.xml) but still get error -- and can see no odd characters opening svctag.xml with Notepad++.

Also tried reinstalling MSXML and Internet Explorer, as per some other posts.

Any other ideas?

Only other clues: this is my work PC -- I have elevated rights and normally have no problems with installation, but I guess there may be some odd rights problem. Also have limited space on my C partition (only 1GB of 12GB available) and have to install MySQL to M partition (though installing MySQL to the C partition still gives the error). The installer works fine on my home PC.

How to repeat:
Run installer from Windows XP. Setup wizard starts and works fine until copying files -- then gives error. Clicking OK rolls back installation.

What exact versions, 5.1.x and 5.5.y, you had used? Please, give the exact URLs used to download them.

I downloaded 32-bit Windows 5.1.46 Essentials from here: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/.

The actual download URL for this is: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mirror.php?id=387719

I also tried 5.5.3 from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mirror.php?id=386672 -- same problem.

I've tried Typical and Custom installations, by the way.

I can not repeat this with 32-bit Windows 5.1.46 Essentials binaries on my 32-bit XP Home SP3.

Me neither: can't repeat this on Windows XP SP3 on my home PC.

I'm puzzled as to what the error message really means, and why svctag.xml can't be open (if the error message is accurate). svctag.xml itself looks fine.

Thank you for the feedback. So you are getting this error in that particular machine?. I couldn't repeat either on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Thanks in advance.

I've just tried this again, but I still get the same error.

Has anyone else managed a workaround for this?

Our comments crossed in the post!

Yes -- I'm only getting this error on this particular machine: I can install fine on my PC at home. I've tried various workarounds (editing svctag.xml, etc.) but without success.

Please, check if this still happens on your magic machine with newer versions, 5.1.49 or 5.5.5.

This relates to EOL (no longer supported) versions of MySQL Server. Furthermore, the old plain msi installers have been superseded by the MySQL Installer for Windows. Thus closing.
