Thank you for the report. In *tar.gz package it is /usr/local/mysql/share which is under mysql tree, so not so critical as in your description. Which package do you use (filename you downloaded)?

Thank you for the feedback. Verified as described using MySQL-server-community-5.1.46-1.rhel5.x86_64.rpm Logs located in /usr/share by default.

Workaround: indicate location manually. But still this is embarrassing.
