Thank you for the report. But version 5.4.2 is old. Please try current version 5.5.1 m2 and if problem still exists send us full MySQL error log file.

Which exact package of MySQL 5.5.1-m1 was used? MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger) downloads are not available, nor are there for PowerPC. -Geert

We do NOT provide 5.5.x binaries for Mac OS X 10.4.x on PowerPC. Looks like this platform will NOT be supported soon. Read http://www.mysql.com/support/eol-notice.html. So, if neither http://downloads.mysql.com/archives/mysql-5.4/mysql-5.4.2-beta-osx10.4-powerpc.dmg nor http://downloads.mysql.com/archives/mysql-5.4/mysql-5.4.2-beta-osx10.4-powerpc.tar.gz works for you, looks like you have to build 5.5.x from latest sources.
