Description:
All Mac OS X packages of the MySQL server include a 32 bit preference pane, even the x86_64 package. On Mac OS X 10.6, this will cause the following alert when opening the MySQL preference pane on an x86_64 Mac:

"To use the “MySQL” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."

After confirming, System Preferences restarts its own 32 bit version, which allows it to load the MySQL preference pane.

How to repeat:
Install MySQL preference pane on Mac OS X 10.6.

Suggested fix:
The preference pane is already a universal binary that includes code for ppc and x86 in 32 bit mode. We should add code for the x86_64 architecture. Code for 64 bit ppc is not required as Mac OS X 10.6 doesn't support ppc.

Thank you for the problem report. Indeed:

The kind people at "swoon dot net" have built a new preference pane that is compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit Intel processors as well as 32-bit PowerPC processors.

http://www.swoon.net/site/software.html

The source code is available. Please merge this code into an official MySQL release.

Timothy installed pref pane on osx build machines prior to 5.1.42 build.
Once dmgs were created we installed the 5.1.42 osx10.6 x64_64 dmg
and saw no alert.

A note has been added to the 5.1.42 changelog:

The Mac OS X MySQL Preference Pane component was not built for 64-bit, which would trigger the System Preferences application to restart into 32-bit mode.

I'm still running MySQL 5.0.15a on my dev laptop.

I recently upgraded my MacBook to Mountain Lion and now have this issue. Is there a way to only upgrade the Perf Pane to the 64-bit version without needing to upgrade the whole of MySQL?

I'm a novice and seems like upgrading the whole of MySQL would be a much bigger deal. I just got through getting MySQL to run after the Mountain Lion upgrade (a symbolic link had gone missing).

If there is an easy way to upgrade the whole of MySQL I'm game for that.

The workaround from swoon dot net mentioned in this thread is no longer on the site (granted, the original comment was from 2009 :-}
