Description:
mysql gets loaded but fails with the message, can't create test file c:\program files\mysql50\data\mission_control.lower.test. The folder exists; it's on my local computer so I don't expect any permission problems.

I've been following the steps in TAASC: Mysql basics; the error occured when
I issued the command, net start mysql50;

How to repeat:
issue command net start mysql50 in a command box on a windows xp system.

Is this the one your are referring to:
http://www.analysisandsolutions.com/code/mysql-tutorial.htm  ??

I think you should forget about it and just download from MySQL download page and doubleclick the installer as you would install any program ...
