Description:
"An error occurred during initialization of the runtime system. Make sure you have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 or newer installed".

At the msdos prompt:

C:\Documents and Settings\LARRY>java -version
java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.3-b02, mixed mode, sharing)

How to repeat:
start the tool

Suggested fix:
none.

What exact tool you tried to start?
[30 Mar 2009 13:38] Larry Gormley
The tool I tried to start in the Windows XP environment was the "MySQL Migration Toolkit".

MT 1.1.17 works for me on Windows XP SP3 with:

C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin>java -version
java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)

I couldn't repeat on Vista Home Premium 64-bit:

c:\dbs>java -version
java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.3-b02, mixed mode, sharing)

I understand and appreciate that none of your testers can duplicate the issue but the issue remains on this computer. I also realize this cannot be considered a high priority issue as no one else seems to have the issue. However, I would like to use the tool. Would it be possible for someone to call me or for me to call someone to work through the issue in hopes that both of us might learn something new (and solve the mystery)?

This is related to your Windows installation.

Please clean and check your disk.

Maybe just de-installation and fresh new installation will help too.

In any case this is not a bug it is related to your environment.

We're sorry, but the bug system is not the appropriate forum for asking help on using MySQL products.

Support on using our products is available both free in our forums at http://forums.mysql.com/ and for a reasonable fee direct from our skilled support engineers at http://www.mysql.com/support/

Thank you for your interest in MySQL.

Description:
I installed Mysql Migration toolkit to migrate an Oracle database to a Mysql one, the result:

Initialized runtime system ---> OK
Initialized Java loader ------> Failed

The error message was: An error occured the initialization of the runtime system. Please make sure you have the Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8 or newer installed.

I have Java version 6 update 15 (build 1.6.0_15-b03) on my computer.

I just installed java 6 on a freshly built window 7 machine and experienced this bug. Looking at other resources, it seems that the 'fix' is to uninstall java 6 and install java 5. Therefore, it might help for you all to look at the java version detection code to see if that might be the cause.

Thanks!

I too have the same problem. So the bottom line is, it just doesn't work. I'm not about to uninstall Java 6 and install Java 5 when my Sun App Server and NetBeans installations are already pointing to Java 6. It would be nice if there was some type of documentation available as to how to proceed when this error occurs. So I guess you don't have to call it a bug. It just doesn't work for us.

This is simple unwillingness to help the Windows community. Stupid grudge...

This will work if you uninstall all java versions and install ONLY and EXACTLY java version 1.5.
