This and similar issues has been reported several times before! I think starting from around 1 year ago.

I tried to find other reports about same but no luck. I never managed to search here very well!

Basically it is not a big problem you are facing. The server is installed and running. Now just connect with any client as 'root'@'localhost' with an empty password and define users and passwords (what is the meaning of 'security settings' in this context).

That said, I do understand the low priority given to this by MySQL organisation. From a developer's perspective this may be insignificant, but from an unexperienced user's perspective it is a 'showstopper'. When such things happens for a new user first time he tries MySQL, he will probably run screaming away!

I meant of course:

I do *NOT* understand the low priority ...

Thank you for the report.

This is actually not a bug: you seems to be upgrading existent MySQL installation, so you have root with password. Please follow Peter's instructions to get new MySQL server working.

But as we have same problem reported early I verify it as feature request.

Possible fix: add dialog which allow enter password for existent root user, so installer could change security settings.

Thanks very much for this bug report. Please add some additional information to help us understand where this problem might be happening.

- What is the full name of the MySQL Server installation package that you're using?
- Is this a new install on a clean machine or are you upgrading from an old version? If you're upgrading, please include the existing server version.
- What version of the MySQL Instance Config Wizard are you using? The version number should be displayed on the Welcome Dialog. The most recent version is 1.0.15.0 for all versions of MySQL Server.
- Is there any additional information on the Welcome Dialog? If the config wizard detects potential conflicts, it will report them here before you begin configuration.
- Does the HKLM\Software\MySQL AB\MySQL Server X.Y\FoundExistingDataDir registry key exist? If so, what's the value?

This information will help us narrow down the list of possible causes of the error message you reported.
