Thank you for the bug report. I couldn't repeat on Vista Ultimate 64-bit using the configuration wizard. The picture I attached shows last step and then using the Control Panel I verified that the service was removed. Have you tried to use the configuration wizard for?. Thanks in advance.

Facing the same problem of mysql service no remove properly upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1. Manage to remove it using procedure below: Reinstall version of mysql where mysql is associated. configure instance and remove instants. And then uninstall old mysql ver. Mysql service should now be remove if you check under windows services.
