Description:
I installed mysql 5.1 and 6.0.9 and when I use Mysql server instance configuration wizard I can't start the service. I do all the procedure until the last step and click on "Execute". I obtain ok for "Prepare configuration" and "Write configuration file" but every time "Strat service" fails.
Before of this version I'm trying to install I had 4.1 and it worked (with some trouble in configuration wizard, solved). I had also Turned User Account Control on or off, disabled the firewall and every suggestion finded on the internet. I just upgrade the so by the microsoft on line upgrading system and by sony vaio.

Thank you

How to repeat:
Actually I don't know how to repeat the problem. ALl I can tell is that I was only installing mysql after disinstallation of the 4.1 version. No other application was running.

Thank you for the report.

Please provide your server error log file. Also check if Windows application logs for mysqld errors.

I had the same problem. I also tried the firewall and other things. In the log I was getting unknown error. Then I realized that the share directory in mysql was missing files. The sub directories were there but none of the files were there. For some reason when I extract from windows explorer with unzip, or the msi package, the files are missing. So I tried with 7zip and they extract ok. Then MySQL started.

Thanks James but it doesn't work for me. I have installed the mysql 5.1.31 and copy all files in the directory but no changes.

This describes my problem precisely, and there's no solution offered here. Obviously, this is not uncommon. Very frustrating. Also, the "data" subdirectory is never created, so there's no error log.

This relates to EOL (no longer supported) versions of MySQL Server. Furthermore, the old plain msi installers have been superseded by the MySQL Installer for Windows. Thus closing.
