Thank you for the report. Is it really installer hangs, not mysqld itself? Please, also, indicate accurate minor version of MySQL you try to install.

Sony Laptop system. I'm learning SQL and just installing this to work through the tutorials. I've tried to install MySQL over and over again. It always goes off the rails in the config step. Have tried 5.5.12 and 5.5.13 with the same results. This is extremely frustrating. Up to this latest attempt it would fail trying to apply security settings. It kept telling me that it failed to connect to the database with password: NO. This time after extensive removal of all traces and cleaning the registry it got to the config tool and froze before getting to the first step. I've let it sit for close to an hour now. At first the Working Set was dropping slowly so I had some hope but it pegged at 8908 and has not moved in a very long time. Any other data I can add?

After fighting with this for the better part of a week I finally un-installed AGAIN and then installed MySQL to C:\MySQLServer5.5.13\ (no spaces anywhere in the path) and selected the default for the location of the Inno DB folder. When I clicked Execute on the wizard it stopped responding for some time but then actually finished! The service is running and I don't see any evidence of errors or problems.

Please, check if this still ever happens with recent versions, 5.5.16+.

Posted by developer: This relates to EOL (no longer supported) versions of MySQL Server and Windows. Furthermore, the MySQL Installer for Windows has taken over from the old plain msi installer. Thus closing.
