I assume this is what the original reporter meant: in the online manual (.chm file) for MySQL server, the table of contents includes many titles under names like "fake title for ...". Also, it has no index and offers no search facilities (accessible through the usual Windows help means). I am referring to the manual that came with MySQL 5.0.15, and I am running under Win XP.

Gisbert, please try downloading the 5.0 CHM manual from: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/ It should have an index and search capabilities.
