In 5.1.31 there are packages

  MySQL-shared-compat-advanced-gpl-5.1.31-0.*.rpm
  MySQL-shared-compat-advanced-5.1.31-0.*.rpm

to complement the existing set of compatibility packages.

In addition to the existing compatibility RPMs for earlier products, a
new set of client library compatibility RPMs were created for the
"MySQL Enterprise Server - Advanced Edition" products. These are
RPM to install instead of the normal "shared" RPM in case you want
to include shared client libraries for older MySQL version.

Noted in 5.1.31 changelog.
