I confirmed that this problem exists with MySQL-server-5.1.30-0.glibc23.ia64.rpm and MySQL-server-advanced-5.1.30-0.rhel3.ia64.rpm. In spite of the error message, the server does start. Please provide instructions for a manual work-around to do cleanup that the uninstall is apparently not doing.

This problem was due to an older mysql installation on the test machine. The rpms are fine.

RPM install should not give an error message when installing over an older version.

Could you please specify what kind of install was there before the upgrade, that did interfere? Also, was a MySQL server running when upgrading? Would help a lot if I would get more details how to reproduce this problem, or clarification if I misunderstood.
