Description:
Most of our use of DEFAULTS involve setting a default user or current time...etc. (Such as CURRENT_TIMESTAMP)  As I understand it you can only provide static values as defaults.

I'd love to see this restriction go away too :)

MySQL AB's general plan is to allow all SQL-standard features, and that 
includes support for: DEFAULT CURRENT_DATE, DEFAULT CURRENT_TIME, DEFAULT 
CURRENT_USER (or similar wording). 
 
This is on the "to do" list so it's possible to say: your request will be 
granted. However, it is not possible to state when.
