Description:
Verifying bug #37113 found Preference Pane unable to reflect if mysqld is working if socket is not /tmp/mysql.sock

How to repeat:
Change my.cnf, so it contains socket=/tmp/mysql.5.0.45.sock
Try to start/stop MySQL server using preference pane.
