Pointing precise version number of MySQL Server will be enough. Note that brunch 4.x is not officially supported by MySQL Workbench.

I would recommend you to upgrade DBMS to one of the latest versions. We didn't test Workbench with early releases of v5.0.x brunch. Preliminary information regarding supported DBMS says it will be MySQL Server v5.0.51 as a minimum supported version.
