Description:
I am working on a CentOS 4 machine.
IN the process of setting up a new mysql password during the BOINC server installations i am getting this error.

>mysqladmin -h localhost -u root password mysqlrootpw
>mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
>error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

How to repeat:
this can be repeated by successive trials
