Thank you for the report. There is no mention about MySQL Instance Manager in the description (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/instance-manager.html). So I thougth category has been choosed by mistake and changed it. If I was wrong please provide information which role MySQL Instance Manager plays in the problem. Also please provide your error log file and backup file which crashes MySQL server.

Please, read http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/error-log.html. Error log is usually a file <hostname>.err in the data directory.

The error occurs on 5.1.21 only, after the database was upgraded. I tried uninstalling 5.1.16 first and then re-installing 5.1.21, but when I went to the Administrator to take a backup (not restore!), the mysql instance failed. The administrator application did not crash, only the server. Thanks for your help. Regards Joseph

Thank you for the feedback. In your error log many errors showing you have not run mysql_upgrade script. Please run it and try again. If you still get errors please provide the backup file.
